What we do

Every Wednesday from October to March the U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes average residential propane and heating oil prices for the states it surveys. The numbers are public but hard to read: a spreadsheet of dollars per gallon. We turn them into the answers people look for: is this price high for the time of year, how much will a fill cost, and is another fuel cheaper here.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t sell fuel or take payment from dealers to rank them.
  • We don’t forecast prices or give financial advice. Patterns from past seasons are shown as history.
  • We don’t write about places we have no data for. If EIA does not survey a state, we say so and use a clearly labelled regional average where one helps.

How the site is paid for

The site may show a small number of clearly labelled advertisements. Ads never change the numbers or their order.
