Why the price per Mcf jumps in summer
EIA’s residential price is total revenue divided by gas delivered. Utilities charge a fixed monthly customer fee, so in summer, when households burn little gas, that fee is spread over a small volume and the price per Mcf looks high ($30.05 in August 2026). The winter price, $8.71 per Mcf for Nov 2025 – Mar 2026, is closer to what each extra unit of heat costs.
Gas or a heat pump in North Dakota?
At last winter’s gas price and this year’s electricity rate (12.5¢ per kWh), heat from a 90%-efficient gas furnace costs $9.34 per million Btu and from a heat pump with a seasonal COP of 2.5 about $14.61. Gas is the cheaper heat here at current prices. Compare every fuel in North Dakota.
