Why the price per Mcf jumps in summer

EIA’s residential price is total revenue divided by gas delivered. Utilities charge a fixed monthly customer fee, so in summer, when households burn little gas, that fee is spread over a small volume and the price per Mcf looks high ($22.83 in May 2026). The winter price, $12.15 per Mcf for Nov 2025 – Mar 2026, is closer to what each extra unit of heat costs.

Gas or a heat pump in Ohio?

At last winter’s gas price and this year’s electricity rate (18.8¢ per kWh), heat from a 90%-efficient gas furnace costs $13.03 per million Btu and from a heat pump with a seasonal COP of 2.5 about $22.05. Gas is the cheaper heat here at current prices. Compare every fuel in Ohio.
